A Word Before We Begin
Blessings, Beloved.
This morning as I was praying for you, I became aware of something I want to share…how easily our minds can overlook the Presence of the Holy One who already lives within us. We tend to stay within the familiar. The idea that the Holy One might take up more space in our lives can feel a little uncertain at first, even a little frightening.
But let me tell you what I have come to know about Him: He is the most patient, kind, and loving Teacher imaginable. He is deeply respectful of your free will. He will only take up as much space in your life as you are willing to give Him. He meets you exactly where you are and grows with you at your own pace. There is no rush. There is no pressure. There is only Love, patiently waiting for you to turn toward Him.
You will notice throughout this guide that I often use the title the Holy One rather than the Holy Spirit. This is simply my personal expression of reverence… I want His holiness and majesty at the forefront of my awareness. You will find your own expression as you journey forward. What matters is not the title but the relationship.
My intention in writing this is simple: to help you become more aware of the extraordinary reality that is already true about you. The Holy One… the same Power that raised Christ from the dead… now lives within you. Not someday. Now. Today. In the middle of your ordinary life. And that awareness, when it truly takes hold, changes everything. (Rom 8:11)
The Foundation: It Begins and Ends With Love
Before anything else I want to say this, because everything that follows must be built on it:
Father’s love for you is the foundation. Not the rules. Not the performance. Not the list of things you must do or stop doing before He will fully accept you. Love. His love pouring into you, causing you to love Him with your whole being, and from that love flowing outward … first toward yourself, then toward others.
True love, His kind of love, is selfless and sacrificial in its essence. It does not demand. It does not keep score. It does not withhold itself until you have earned it. It simply gives. And as you receive it and let it settle into the deepest places of your heart, it will naturally begin to flow outward… as compassion, as generosity, as patience with yourself and with others.
Build everything that follows on that foundation. Relationship with Father, not rules. Love, not law. Always.
The Holy One and the Trinity: A Stunning Picture
To understand the Holy One, it helps to see how He has always worked… right from the very first words of scripture.
In Genesis 1, before anything existed, we find the three Persons of the Trinity working together in perfect harmony:
• The Father speaks light and order into existence. Genesis begins with God the Father initiating creation: And God said…
• The Holy One hovers. Genesis 1:2 tells us the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. The Hebrew word rachaph means to flutter, brood, or nurture … like a mother bird tenderly caring for her eggs. The Holy One was brooding over the formless void, preparing it for life, nurturing what the Father was about to speak into being.
• The Son is the Word. John 1:1-3 and Colossians 1:16-17 reveal that the words the Father spoke in Genesis were the eternal Logos… the Word, the Son… through whom all things were made.
The Father initiates. The Holy One nurtures and brings to completion. The Son is the creative Word Himself. It is a breathtaking picture of Love working in complete unity.
And this same pattern is at work in your life right now. Father is speaking light and order into your story. The Holy One is brooding over what feels formless and uncertain in you, nurturing it toward life. And the Word… scripture… is the sword the Holy One places in your hands for every battle you face.
I love this image: the Holy One throwing me a sword in the middle of a battle. I may not always understand how a particular scripture fits my situation. But I trust that the Holy One sees what I cannot see. So when He whispers a verse to my heart… for example, He has not given me a spirit of fear but of love, power and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7)… I simply speak it out boldly, even if I don’t fully understand why in that moment. Ephesians 6:17 says it clearly in the Amplified Classic: the sword that the Spirit wields is the Word of God. He wields it. We simply speak it.
The Holy One Lives in You: What Scripture Says
This is not poetic language. This is the literal, extraordinary truth of what happened the moment you gave your life to Christ. Look at what scripture declares:
• 1 Corinthians 6:19 ~ “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?”
• Romans 8:9 ~ “You are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.”
• 1 Corinthians 3:16 ~ “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?”
• 2 Timothy 1:14 ~ “Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you … guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.”
• John 14:17 ~ “The Spirit of truth… lives with you and will be in you.”
• Galatians 4:6 ~ “God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, Abba, Father.”
You are not trying to get God to come to you. He is already there. The work is simply becoming more aware of what is already true.
How the Holy One Empowers You Every Day
The Holy One is not a distant or occasional presence. He is actively working in you every single day in specific, practical ways:
• He guides your mind. He reminds you of scripture and teaches you truth when you are making choices. (John 14:26)
• He prays for you. When you do not know what to pray, He intercedes on your behalf with groanings too deep for words. (Romans 8:26)
• He transforms your character. Over time He produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and gentleness within you. (Galatians 5:22-23)
• He convicts gently. He points out areas that need to change… not to condemn you but to heal you and keep your conscience clear. (John 16:8)
• He gives you gifts. He equips you with specific abilities to encourage and help others. (1 Corinthians 12:7)
• He comforts you. He is your Counselor, bringing deep peace in the middle of difficult seasons. (John 14:16)
• He gives you boldness. He provides the courage to share your faith and speak truth when it matters. (Acts 1:8)
Walking in the Holy One is a daily, moment-by-moment decision to align your heart with Father’s will. I have found that simply talking to Him constantly, silently within, or out loud when I am alone … creates a beautiful, ongoing conversation that carries me through each day. You are never alone, Beloved. He is always there. Recognize Him. Acknowledge His Presence. Talk to Him. Let Him talk back.
Daily Steps to Walk in the Spirit
These are not rules to follow perfectly. They are practices to return to… simple rhythms that keep your heart turned toward Him:
1. Surrender Your Morning
Start your day by consciously yielding your will, your schedule, and your attitude to Father’s care. Even thirty seconds of simply saying, “I am Yours today” is enough to set the tone. (Romans 12:1)
2. Renew Your Mind
Read even a few verses of scripture daily. This is not about religious duty… it is feeding your spirit the truth that pushes back against every lie the day will try to tell you. (Romans 12:2)
3. Pray Continually
Keep a running conversation with Father throughout your day. Ask for wisdom before you react. Thank Him for small moments. Share your frustrations honestly. There are no wrong words with Him. (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
4. Listen and Obey Quickly
When you feel a gentle inner prompting to serve someone, give something, speak a kind word, or hold your tongue… act on it. Those quiet nudges are often Him. (Isaiah 30:21)
5. Confess Sin Immediately
When you stumble… and you will, we all do… agree with Father about it quickly, receive His forgiveness, and move forward without lingering in shame. He is not keeping score. (1 John 1:9)
6. Choose Praise
Gratitude is one of the most powerful spiritual practices available to you. A thankful heart stays focused on the Spirit rather than on your problems. (Ephesians 5:18-20)
How to Recognize the Holy One’s Voice
As you grow in your relationship with the Holy One, you will begin to distinguish His voice from your own thoughts and from outside pressures. Here is what His voice characteristically sounds like:
• He agrees with scripture. The Holy One will never prompt you to do something that contradicts the Bible. When in doubt, look it up. (John 16:13)
• He sounds like Jesus. His tone is gentle, encouraging, and peaceful… never chaotic, frantic, or harsh. (James 3:17)
• He convicts but never condemns. He will point out specific things to address, but He always leaves you with hope and a clear path forward… never with hopeless shame. (Romans 8:1)
• He leads toward others. His promptings tend to move you toward selflessness, generosity, humility, and courage rather than toward self-protection or pride. (Galatians 5:17)
• He brings supernatural peace. Even when He asks something difficult of you, a deep underlying calm accompanies it. (Philippians 4:7)
• He confirms through others. Often a mature, trustworthy believer will echo the exact thing you have been sensing inside. (Proverbs 11:14)
When Father is never stressed by your desire to be certain. He honors a humble, teachable heart that wants to get it right. When you feel a prompting and are unsure, the wisest response is always to pause and test it rather than rush.
What to Do When You Are Unsure
Here is a practical checklist for those moments when you feel something stirring but are not certain where it is coming from:
1. Hit the Pause Button
Do not rush. Father operates in peace. Anxiety, urgency, and pressure are rarely His tools. (Isaiah 28:16)
2. Do the Bible Filter Test
Ask yourself: does this align with the character and explicit teaching of scripture? If it contradicts the Bible, set it aside. If you are unsure whether something is in the Bible, a simple Google search of the topic with the word ‘scripture’ will bring up many references to explore. (1 John 4:1)
3. Pray for Direct Clarity
Ask Father plainly: “Lord, if this is You, make it clear and give me peace. If it is not, take the desire away.” (James 1:5)
4. Check Your Motivation
Ask yourself honestly: does this prompting serve my own comfort and pride, or does it lift up Jesus, honor Father, and serve someone else? (John 16:14)
5. Seek Wise Counsel
Share what you are sensing with a mature believer you trust. Ask them: does this sound like the wisdom of Father to you? (Proverbs 15:22)
6. Watch for Open Doors
Father often uses timing and circumstance to confirm His direction. If doors naturally open and align with the prompting, take notice. (Revelation 3:8)
7. Step Out in Faith
If the prompting aligns with scripture, brings peace, and points toward love… take a small step forward. Father will redirect your path if your heart’s genuine desire is to obey Him. (Proverbs 16:9)

A Prayer for Clarity and Direction
When you feel unsure or simply need to reset and hear from the Holy One, this prayer is a place to begin. Read it slowly. Mean every word.
“Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving me Your Holy Spirit to live inside me, guide me, and protect me. Right now my mind is full of thoughts and I am not sure if this prompting is from You or from my own imagination.
Lord, I want to obey You above all else. Please quiet my anxious thoughts and speak clearly to my heart. If this desire is from You, increase it, open the doors for it, and give me Your supernatural peace to move forward. If it is not from You, please take it away completely.
Shield me from deception, pride, and frantic rushing. Clear my vision so I can see Your truth, and help me rest patiently in Your perfect timing.
I trust You to guide my steps today. In Jesus Name I ask …”
As you grow in your faith you will learn to exercise spiritual authority in prayer, speaking directly to any thought or spiritual opposition that is not from Father and commanding it to be silent in Jesus’ name. For now, know that this authority is yours as a believer. (Luke 10:19) When your heart is genuinely surrendered to Father and you are seeking His will, you can boldly command every distracting voice, whether from the enemy, from your own anxious thoughts, or from outside pressure, to be still, and ask the Holy Spirit to fill that space with His clarity and peace.

A Simple Framework for Your Quiet Time
Setting aside even fifteen minutes each day to be still with Father will become one of the most valuable habits of your life. Here is a simple structure to begin with:
1. Pick a Fixed Time and Place
Choose a specific time and a quiet spot where you face as few distractions as possible. Jesus did this Himself. (Mark 1:35)
2. Silence Your Phone
Put it in another room or on Do Not Disturb. This time is sacred. Guard it.
3. Start With Worship
Spend a few minutes simply thanking Father for who He is. Not for what He has done, just for who He is. This centers your heart before anything else. (Psalm 100:4)
4. Invite the Holy One
Pray a simple sentence: Holy Spirit, open my eyes to see truth in Your Word today. (Psalm 119:18)
5. Read a Short Passage
One chapter or even a few verses, read slowly. Understanding a little deeply is worth far more than skimming a lot quickly.
6. Write One Thing Down
Journal one insight that stood out and one practical way you might carry it into your day.
7. End in Prayer
Commit your day, your worries, and your schedule into Father’s hands before you leave that quiet place.
A Beginner’s Reading Plan
If you are not sure where to start in the Bible, here is a gentle and purposeful sequence:
Step 1: The Gospel of John (21 chapters)
Begin here. John introduces you to the heart, love, and identity of Jesus more intimately than any other gospel. Pay particular attention to chapters 14 through 16, where Jesus explains exactly who the Holy Spirit is, why He is coming, and what He will do in you.
Step 2: The Book of Acts (28 chapters)
Acts is the direct sequel to John. Watch how ordinary, imperfect people are completely transformed and empowered by the Holy Spirit. This is your story beginning to unfold.
Step 3: The Book of Philippians (4 chapters)
A short, beautiful letter written from a prison cell about finding true joy and peace regardless of circumstances. Learn here how to anchor your thoughts in God’s peace.
Step 4: The Book of James (5 chapters)
Highly practical. James shows you how to live out your faith in the texture of everyday life ~ how to handle trials, guard your words, and walk in wisdom.
Quick Tips for Reading Scripture
• Read just one chapter a day. Three to five minutes is enough to begin.
• Don’t rush. Five verses understood deeply will change you more than three chapters skimmed.
• Use a readable translation. The NIV (New International Version) or NLT (New Living Translation) are clear and accessible for everyday reading.
• If a verse confuses you, search it online. Type the reference and the word ‘meaning’ and you will find many helpful explanations.

One Last Thing, Beloved
I want to leave you with a single verse. Not as a conclusion but as an anchor… something to return to on the days when everything feels uncertain, when the many things press in, when you wonder whether Father truly sees you and whether you truly matter to Him.
“For the Father Himself tenderly loves you because you have loved Me and have believed that I came out from the Father.”
~ John 16:27 (Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)
Listen with your heart, Beloved. Jesus says the Father tenderly loves you because you love Jesus. Not because you are performing perfectly. Not because you have read enough scripture or prayed long enough or gotten everything right. Because you love Him. That is the whole requirement. That is the whole foundation.
Anchor this verse in your heart. Let it frame every opinion that comes against you ~ every voice that says you are not enough, not loved, not seen. Keep loving Jesus. And rest ~ fully, deeply, without striving ~ in the tender love of a Father who sees everything you are and calls it beloved.
Know that I am here praying for you.
With all my love,
Tess
