Putting on Christ

Each morning when I rise, I long to set my heart and mind in alignment with the Father before I step into the world. Today, as I was getting ready for prayer, something so simple became sacred: I slipped on my jacket and felt the Spirit whisper, “Be clothed in Christ.”

It struck me how powerful this image really is. We dress ourselves daily without thought but what if every jacket, every scarf, every piece of clothing became a cue to also dress ourselves spiritually? What if the act of getting ready was transformed into a meditation that reminded us who we are in Him?

The Practice of “Putting on Christ”

The Apostle Paul gives us this picture in Colossians 3:12:

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

This passage is more than a suggestion—it’s an invitation to live in our identity as chosen, holy, and dearly loved children of God. Only when we first embrace His love can we extend that love outward through compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

Other passages echo this truth:

  • Galatians 3:27“For all of you who were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
  • Romans 13:14“Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.”

The metaphor of clothing is intentional. Just as we prepare our bodies for the day, we are invited to prepare our spirits with the character of Christ.

A Simple Activation

One way to integrate this practice is to use your daily routines as spiritual activations. When you put on your jacket, whisper the Scripture aloud. When you put on your robe or shoes, say a simple prayer:

“Father, today I put on Christ. Help me to represent You with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.”

This pairing of physical action and spiritual meditation can create a cue that reshapes your mindset each morning. Researchers even note that these kinds of cues strengthen memory and help us carry truths more deeply into our daily lives.

Another way is to write the verse by hand. Writing is a multi-sensory process that engages more of the brain than typing. When you slowly write Colossians 3:12, you aren’t just copying words—you are encoding truth into your heart. Slip the card into your pocket or tape it near your mirror, so dressing becomes a holy moment of preparation.

The Foundation: Loved First

It’s vital to notice how Colossians 3:12 begins: “As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved…” Before we ever attempt to live out compassion, kindness, or patience—we must first remember that we are loved.

We cannot manufacture these virtues on our own. They flow naturally when our hearts are rooted in the Father’s love. When you know you are chosen, holy, and dearly loved, putting on Christ becomes less of a duty and more of a joyful response.

Journal Prompts

Take a few moments today to reflect on these questions. You may want to keep a notebook nearby or even write your answers on slips of paper you tuck into your pocket.

  1. What does it mean to you personally to “put on Christ” as you start your day?
  2. Which of the virtues in Colossians 3:12—compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience—do you sense the Spirit nudging you to wear more intentionally this week?
  3. How might your interactions at home, work, or in your community change if you practiced this simple activation daily?
  4. Do you struggle to first believe you are chosen, holy, and dearly loved? Write down what shifts in your heart when you let this truth settle deeply.
  5. Can you create a morning cue (like putting on your jacket) to remind yourself that you are clothing yourself in Christ’s love?

Final Encouragement

Beloved, tomorrow morning when you put on your jacket, don’t just prepare for the weather—prepare your heart. Whisper the Word. Clothe yourself in Christ. Step into the day carrying His love, and let it spill over into every conversation and every interaction.

And if today’s reflection touched you, I’d love for you to continue the conversation on our Facebook page, The Fortress 1230 AM WKBO. Share your thoughts, prayer requests, or how you’re learning to put on Christ each morning. Your journey encourages us all.

You are continually in my prayers and forever in my heart.
