How to Regain Traction When Life Leaves You Feeling Adrift

Slipping on ice and being helped up

Blessings, beloved brothers and sisters. As we prayed for you this morning, there was a deep awareness of what God is doing in this moment. It felt as though, after a long stretch of going straight with no change in sight, we finally reached a turn. A shift. A new direction.

And with that shift came a word that repeated again and again in prayer:

Bruised season.

A season where someone has felt knocked down, worn thin, and without traction. A season where you’ve been tethered to God—you’ve never let go—but still felt adrift. As if you were floating on a line without the strength or clarity to pull yourself forward. No movement. No fruit. No joy. No connection to the power source you once felt so vividly.

If that resonates with you, take heart. God is reaching for you in a very tender, timely way.

The Image God Kept Showing: Time To Refuel

For days in prayer, the same image kept appearing, but we waited for the Spirit to release it before sharing. Today, the release came.

The image was of a fighter jet aligning midair with a tanker aircraft to refuel. In mid-flight, the jet has to carefully approach the tanker, sometimes making several attempts before the connection locks in. But the moment it does—when that fuel rod engages—life-giving power starts to flow.

As we prayed, that image came alive. Many of you have made attempts to reconnect with God, attempts to regain clarity or strength, but felt “off” or discouraged. Beloved, it’s okay. Try again. Refresh the attempt.

Because once that connection locks into place, the energy, clarity, and direction you’ve cried out for will begin to pour into your spirit.

Your Thoughts Are the Key to Traction

The scripture that filled the room as we prayed was Proverbs 23:7:

“As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”

We weren’t just called to proclaim it but to meditate on it. Every forward step begins with the thoughts you allow to take root. Thoughts create feelings, and feelings fuel action. Positive thoughts energize you toward purpose. Negative thoughts drain you and pull you toward despair. Indifferent thoughts leave you stuck.

James chapter one speaks of the double-minded person—unstable, unsure, unable to gain footing. But Isaiah 50:7 gives us the remedy:

“I have set my face like flint, and I know I will not be put to shame.”

Your face…not your emotions…must be set with determination. This is where traction begins.

Don’t chase the negative thoughts. Don’t wrestle them.
Choose the praiseworthy.
Choose the good report.
Choose the thought that aligns with God’s voice.

Strengthen the positive, and the negative will lose its grip.

Enter the Destination God Put in Your Heart

Another image came: the GPS. You can’t receive directions if you don’t enter a destination. God has placed a “homing beacon” inside of you—something He planned before the foundation of the world—and even if it has flickered or dimmed, it hasn’t gone out.

Romans 11:29 says:

“For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.”

He does not take back what He has placed in you. Ephesians 2:10 adds that God prepared paths ahead of time, so you could walk in the good life He designed for you.

Beloved, God hasn’t changed His mind about you. Not after your mistakes, not after your discouragement, not after your detours.

The call is still there.
The path is still there.
The beacon is still there.

What To Do Next

As we prayed for the one who has felt lost, tired, or ashamed of how long this bruised season has lasted, the Lord gave clear direction:

Guard your thoughts because that is where traction begins.
Reconnect with someone who bears spiritual fruit—someone mature, compassionate, and Christlike who can help you identify what’s been holding you back.
Let God burn away condemnation because it is never from Him.
Meditate on Romans 11:29, Ephesians 2:10, and Isaiah 50:7 until they awaken that beacon within you again.

You are not starting over.

You are reconnecting.

And once that connection locks in place, the fuel you’ve been missing will begin to flow again…strength, clarity, joy, vision, purpose.

Your Traction Will Return

Beloved, this is a turning point. A directional shift. A moment where God is calling you back into alignment with what He has spoken over your life.

Let His word settle into your heart today:

“As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”
“I have set my face like flint.”
“My gifts and call are irrevocable.”
“You are My workmanship, created for good works.”

This is your moment to refuel.
Your moment to regain traction.
Your moment to step back into the life God prepared for you.

And as always, know that I am praying for you.
